Cameron came home late the following night. He had called ahead, apologized profusely, finally arriving home way past Emma's bedtime, to dim lighting and a snoozing Jason, six foot three inches of man sprawled this way and that on the main couch. For a few minutes he stood and watched, and wondered.

Something about Jason sent warmth to the pit of Cam's belly, and he wasn't entirely sure what it was. Maybe the way he helped Emma, the way he obviously loved Emma in particular and kids in general, perhaps how he controlled Deefur, his very presence calming the dog in seconds. Whatever magic Jason did in this house, Cameron loved him for it.

Loosening his tie, he slumped into the chair opposite the dozing nanny.

Jason woke up and blinked sleepily at him. "Hey," he said softly, glancing up at the clock "S'nearly midnight. You okay?"

"Yeah, m'okay, had a wiring failure and the contractors were late on site," Cameron said, laying his head back and sighing.

"Emma wants you to go give her a kiss." Jason yawned widely and stretched. Cameron just stared, taking his fill, focusing on the strip of warm skin showing as Jason's shirt rode up. This gorgeous man alone on a couch was a complete waste. Jason should have someone to share his life with. He was a good man. "We had a visit from a cop, said a local had informed him about a possible dangerous dog."

"Caruthers."

"I guessed so. Cop took one look at Deefur, asked a few questions, and then filed it away."

"Sorry you had to deal with it."

"It was fine. The cop was kind of hot." Jason raised his eyebrows and leered.

Cameron hesitated, questions on the tip of his tongue, wondering how to phrase his next question and decided to be blunt.

"Why don't you ever go on dates?" He blurted out, and instantly regretted the move as Jason's eyes widened and he looked strangely at Cameron. "Because you can, you know… go out I mean… with men." Jeez, he sounded like a complete idiot.

"I know I can." Jason shifted to rest his elbows on his knees, his chin on his hands. "I don't want to date some random guy, and you don't exactly meet a load of gay guys at the school gate."

"See that's it—you never spend time away from us." This wasn't coming out right. He sounded like he had an issue with Jason never going out on dates, when in reality it was the farthest thing from his mind.

"Is it a problem? I could go out if you need the house, meet friends from the school, or from college. I can easily find somewhere else to—"

"No—there's not a problem—I… Look I don't want you missing out on your life because you are here making my life easier."

"I have a roof over my head, a kid I love like my own, a dog, and a friend in you. What else do I need?" Jason stood with another stretch, clearly ending the conversation. "'Night…"

Cameron waited until Jason had left before collapsing back tiredly into the chair.
